Aldi is known for its grocery deals, for good reason — but did you know that it can also be a great source of plants? This week, for example, the supermarket chain is offering 5” Christmas cacti for $4.99 apiece as part of Aldi Finds, a weekly rotating selection of limited-edition, sought-after products. Aldi’s Christmas cacti come wrapped in three different festive patterns: gold, red, and red with a snowflake design.
Don’t let the name fool you, because the Christmas cactus is a tropical plant. Originally hailing from the mountains of southeastern Brazil, it’s known for its leafless green stems, which grow downward in flat pads. When placed in the right conditions, pink, white, or red fuschia flowers can bloom on the cactus numerous times each year — not just in winter.
To give your Christmas cactus the best possible care, experts recommend planting it in lightweight, free-draining soil in a pot with drainage holes. Make sure to water it thoroughly as soon as the top inch of soil dries, and aim to keep your plant in bright, direct light and temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees. And don’t worry, pet parents: Christmas cacti are dog- and cat-safe!
With its colorful blooms and succulent hardiness, a Christmas cactus is sure to add some wintry cheer to any space. You can pick one up now while they’re just $4.99 at select Aldi locations. If you’re not near an Aldi or your local store doesn’t have them in stock, you can find similar Christmas cacti at Lowe’s for $19.90 or on Amazon for $12.98.
