Mary Disser pays $2,250 a month to rent this 800-square-foot Atlanta loft, which she’s lived in for almost two years with her dog, Roger, an 8-year-old Cockapoo: This loft is situated in a historical eclectic artist community called StudioPlex that was built in 1925 in Atlanta. Although each loft is quite different, I was lucky to snag a renovated unit that acted as the perfect blank slate. After living in Los Angeles and New York for the past decade, I truly started fresh in terms of furnishings.
Other than my collection of tchotchkes, I spent time selecting pieces to work within the space while still being renter-friendly. I love mixing vintage and modern pieces to create an elevated environment that is calm yet textural. This apartment coincided with my first time working from home; I really wanted to create a haven to feel creative, calm, and at home.
I am a fashion director and I think how I dress myself and how I furnish my space are totally tied together. I like to create looks that combine found pieces as well as modern staples. So whether it is building an outfit around the perfect vintage T-shirt or denim, or building a room around some thrifted candle stick holders, the creative process is the same.
I like my closet and my home to be adaptable to how I’m feeling over the weeks or months — so everything in my space gets moved around quite often! Because I like to keep my color palette quite neutral, I really rely on combining different textural elements to keep it interesting. The industrial feeling of the loft was the perfect foundation to add in the warmth from wood, elevation from marble and velvet, and organic earthiness from pottery and books.
Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Post-modern, cool, neutral, textural, elevated.
What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is my dining area for sure! My all-time prized possession is my vintage 1970s Italian marble table that I scored from a local reseller, @TacitHome. So any home I have in the future will have to work with this piece — it’s a non-negotiable. I love playing with layering around this table — combining it with the modern dining chairs and eclectic sculptural pieces is the perfect balance of old and new for me.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The ceramic cowboy boots pictured are definitely one my of favorite items I’ve bought recently! I nabbed this from @AtlantaUsedFurniture and I think it provides the perfect quirky nod to living in the South while still maintaining my style DNA.
Any advice for creating a home you love? I think everything is about balancing emotion and function. Finding an emotional piece to build a room around, whether that is a chair, sculpture, rug, etc., is so important so that your identity is injected into the space. I think keeping the integrity of the space in mind is also key. The idea that this is a converted industrial loft always remained in the back of my mind while furnishing. So if my next home is a Spanish revival or a modern high-rise, I will build around that foundation while still keeping it *me*!
